You probably don’t even remember signing up for half of them. A few bucks here, a streaming service there… maybe a box of mystery snacks or makeup you don’t even use anymore.
Subscriptions are sneaky—and they’re quietly draining your bank account.
In the past, scams were bold. They called your grandma. They sent sketchy emails. But now? They come wrapped in auto-renewals, free trials, and “cancel anytime” promises. And yes, you’re the mark.
The Silent Budget Killer
It’s called the “set it and forget it” model. And it’s designed that way on purpose. You sign up for a free trial, forget to cancel, and suddenly you’re paying $8.99 a month for something you don’t use. Multiply that by 6 or 7 different services, and you’re losing hundreds every year.
We’ve worked with members who are shocked to realize how much of their monthly budget is going to things they didn’t even remember subscribing to. That money could be going toward savings, debt payoff, or even groceries.
Freedom, Sold Separately
Here’s the twist: these services promise “freedom.” Watch what you want, eat what you crave, try new things—all without leaving home. But true financial freedom? It doesn’t come from mindless spending. It comes from knowing where your money is, and what it’s doing for you.
Subscription overload robs you of that freedom, one unnoticed charge at a time.
The Fix: Get Ruthless
If you want to stop being the mark, you have to get ruthless with your recurring charges. Here’s how:
- Audit Everything. Pull up your bank or credit card statement. Go line by line. If it auto-renews, it gets reviewed.
- Ask: Do I use this? Do I love this? If not, cancel it. Not later. Now.
- Use Subscription Management Tools. There are free and low-cost apps that help you track and cancel subscriptions—use them.
- Set a “Subscription Limit.” Allow yourself only a set number of recurring charges each month. Make them earn their spot.
